Canyon de Chelly stands as a remarkable natural wonder, featuring a stunning vista adorned with historical Navajo locations, all nestled between crimson sandstone walls and lush woodlands.
Within the Navajo Nation territory, the breathtaking Canyon de Chelly National Monument spans more than 80,000 acres in northwestern Arizona. To reach this stunning location, take South Rim Drive, which winds through a picturesque landscape for about 15 miles across the southern part of the national monument. Along your journey, you’ll encounter seven lookout points offering spectacular panoramic vistas. From certain vantage spots, the canyon’s base appears nearly a thousand feet beneath you!
Stop by the Spider Rock Overlook, offering breathtaking vistas of the iconic 750-foot tall spires deeply rooted in Native American lore. According to tradition, these towering structures house theSpider Woman, believed to have instructed the Navajo people in weaving and has vigilantly watched over their sacred lands for more than three centuries.
To venture into the canyon with its striking red sandstone walls—formed through millions of years by flowing water—you must engage a licensed indigenous guide from the region. At the Face Rock Overlook, disembark from your car to admire the dramatic stone sculptures and sinuous forms carved throughout the canyon; down below, fellow trekkers appear minuscule against such grandeur.
Informational kiosks provide helpful pointers about hidden landmarks tucked away among cliff faces. Meanwhile, distant Black Rock marks what was once an active volcano but now stands worn-down and covered in lush vegetation.
