Governor Mutahi Kahiga of Nyeri, who is closely allied with ex-deputy president Rigathi Gachgua, warmly welcomed President William Ruto as he initiated a developmental visit throughout the Mt. Kenya area.

Addressing the crowd in Kieni, within Nyeri County, Kahiga conveyed his gratitude for the president’s dedication to enhancing the region’s infrastructure and healthcare facilities.

“This is an occasion for me to extend a warm welcome to you in Kieni, located within Nyeri County, your Excellency. We are deeply grateful as you bring with you the invaluable gift of progress. It has been noted that over KSh 850 million accompanies you, and these funds will significantly aid in meeting the requirements of our community members. This area has historically trailed others concerning advancements,” stated Kahiga.

The governor pointed out that the money provided to the county administration frequently falls short of what’s needed to tackle significant infrastructure issues, notably in building and upkeep of roads.

He acknowledged his difficulties in enhancing the county’s road infrastructure because of budget limitations. Nonetheless, he praised Ruto for stepping in and pledging support to upgrade healthcare centers in the area.

“The funds provided to the county government are insufficient, and this has caused difficulties with road initiatives. Therefore, we appreciate your commitment following our talks; you consented to improve our hospital in Naromoru and pledged to supply essential medical equipment to enhance healthcare services for our community,” he said additionally.

Kahiga went on to voice his strong backing for the president’s leadership, rejecting any idea that Ruto was not welcome in Nyeri. He encouraged the nation’s leader to make frequent visits to the area and keep pushing forward with various developmental initiatives.

“I am grateful to the president for initiating progress in our county. Today, I wish to convey this message: ignore those advising against your presence in Nyeri. We hope you will return frequently as each of your visits brings much-needed advancements,” he emphasized.

Gaps appear within Gachagna’s team as Ruto tours Mount Kenya region

Kahiga’s comments arise against a backdrop of escalating tensions within Gachgua’s political circle, where various supporters are voicing contrasting opinions on the most effective way to interact with the president.

Disagreements have surfaced within his group, as supporters challenge his leadership and focus on the Mount Kenya region leading up to 2027. Despite not being an official candidate for president, his attempts to galvanize opposition against Ruto are hampered by infighting, casting doubt on whether he can bring together those who back him.

Prominent individuals such as activist George Morara and Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba have encouraged Governor Gachigua to embrace a more comprehensive strategy. The situation intensified after Gen Z activist Morara Kebaso severed connections with his group from the Inject Party, alleging that he was fostering ethnic-based politicking.
