In Spain, Pedro Sánchez’s Socialist Party is adopting a stronger position against the Polisario. On Tuesday, April 1, the PSOE branch in the Navarrese Parliament took action.
voted against
A proposal aimed at acknowledging the Polisario Front as “the exclusive and legitimate representative of the Sahrawi population.”
The resolution was approved by the Commission for Coexistence and International Solidarity within the same organization, receiving significant backing from the People’s Party, EH Bildu (the Basque separatist party), and various regional entities. Additionally, the document condemns Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s endorsement of Morocco’s autonomy proposal for Western Sahara, a plan initially submitted to the UN in 2007.
Significantly, at its 41st congress held in November in Seville, the PSOE omitted the Sahara issue from the official document shared with attendees.
It should be noted that several prominent members of the PSOE party, including ex-Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and former Defense Minister José Bono, frequently attend conferences hosted by the Sahrawi Movement for Peace. Established in April 2020, this movement has questioned the Polisario Front’s claim to exclusively speak on behalf of the Sahrawi population.
